“ “Practice makes perfect”. I used to hear this proverb from my childhood. Now my realization is perfect practice makes you perfect. Like this, networking is important, however, finding a right person or organization is very important. After coming to Canada, we all hear this, to success in Canada; you must have a good network. It is true that a lot of supports and services are available for newcomers. However, when it is about someone who listens to you nonjudgmentally, who empowers you unconditionally, who supports you throughout and gives you options to choose your direction independently, first thing, it’s coming to my mind is Mukul vai (Bccb Job Support Team).
Before coming to Canada, I worked in mental health field for several years. I knew that in order to success in Canada, I had to do some odd jobs. I did it several years. Sometimes I do it still. However, I was determined that I would find some opportunity in my filed which I am compassion about. For mental health sector, more peoples, more problems, requires more support, therefore, more jobs.
I knew I need around three years to get a professional job in Canada. I had a SMART goal. However, I found very difficult to find a volunteer position in my profession. While I was a student of EAPP course at Centennial College, one of psychology teacher referred me to Wood Green Community Services to do volunteering. I did support one woman with development disability for her day to day activities which includes teaching counting and educating Basic English before volunteering as a walk-in counselor there. That’s the “CLICK” for me. I decided to upgrade myself. I realized it might get a job in my profession without upgrading, however, I would not feel as comfortable as I am now. I thought still I am young; government is giving money (OSAP) to study, so WHY NOT?
I was undecided what to choose for upgrading. I had psychology and social work as an option. I met with Mukul vai. I phoned him. I was surprized that he invited us (me & my wife) to his house for explore which I did not expect. He just listened to us and explored it, but he did not tell us what to do. It was in my hand. I was amazed by his willingness to help us unconditionally. We became family friend after that. After that, I am using him as a referee considering him as a family friend. He is my lifetime mentor and inspiration. With the help of him and other genuine helper Zakaria vai, I decided to study social work. Now I believe YES, I took the right decision.
While I was studying, I was informed that Ryerson University, Strength in Unity project was looking for someone who has education and experiences in mental health field. I contacted to Bangladeshi-Canadian Community Services (BCS). I applied and they hired me as part-time basis. That’s was perfect for me because I was also a full-time student that time. After 3 months, they offered me for a full-time position. I worked there for almost two years as a full-time basis. Meanwhile, I have completed my BSW degree from Ryerson University. I was lucky enough as my coordinator and project investigator both were Ryerson’s professors. They supported me throughout. I remember I used to go to class in the morning, then office (12-8) and after that I went to Rogers’s center to sell bears.
Alhamdulliah, I am doing professional jobs for 4 years now. After finishing my placement at Canadian mental Health Association Durham, they offered me a full-time permanent position in my profession. It is my second year now. I am truly happy with everything that happened with me. I have just doing an entry level job, however, the satisfaction I have form this job is unbelievable. It is a combination of my all expectations, for me, it is my dream job. Lastly, I would say I am thankful to my wife, my family (brother and sister-in laws) and ongoing support from Mukul vai, who gave me few but most important guidelines. Therefore, to success in Canada, we just need one “CLICK” and we do not know “where and when it comes” Therefore, right person and right networking is very IMPORTANT.” — “Saiful Alam
